El Calafate to Punta Arenas, Chile

Ride Day 73: El Calafate to Punta Arenas, Chile

Argentina, Border Crossings, Chile, Ride Days, South AmericaBy Peter J RicciFebruary 16, 20172 Comments

After a few rain soaked days in El Calafate, Argentina I made my way to Punta Arenas, Chile, and yet another border crossing. I would start on Ruta 40 then onto Ruta 3, then cross over into Chile on Ruta 255 and finish on Ruta 9.

El Calafate, Argentina was again one of the huge markers for my trip. After setting off from Gobernador Gregores at first light, I got on my way for a pretty tough riding day on Ruta 40. After leaving Gobernador Gregores, I hit dirt roads less than half a mile outside of town.

Finally onto Ruta 40 and Gobernador Gregores, Argentina! I will miss Chile immensely, the country provided me with some amazing highlights so far on this trip, including my rides to Chile Chico and Hornopiren.

Ride Day 69: Coyhaique to Chile Chico, Chile

I set off at sunrise to make my way to Chile Chico today in what was supposed to be a 2-hour ferry ride from Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez to Chile Chico. Today was by far my most awesome riding day of the trip so far. Damn it was incredible!

La Junta to Coyhaique, Chile

Ride Day 68: La Junta to Coyhaique, Chile

Today I headed to Coyhaique, Chile after spending just one night in La Junta, again, today was a mix of off-road and paved road to get to Coyhaique. The weather was not smiling on me today. But I cannot complain as I have had so many great days, just would have been nice to see more of the mountains on today’s journey.

La Junta, La Junta, La Junta! After just one night in Hornopiren, today was a mix of off-road, on the ferry, off-road, on the ferry, off the road and then on the road to get to La Junta. I stayed one night at the Hostería del Río a few minutes outside of Hornopiren in a place on the Rio Negro. It was pretty run down, but the people were very nice.

Puerto Montt to Hornopiren, Chile

Ride Day 66: Puerto Montt to Hornopiren, Chile

After a few days in Puerto Montt, it was time to head to Hornopiren and get ready for Patagonia. Although today’s ride was only 160 miles (259 km), most of it was done off-road and the scenery made for a slow day. I was just too busy looking at the gorgeous views and stopping for photos.

At last, today my destination is Puerto Montt. I am staying at a Cabana about 30 minutes outside of the city in a place on the water called Quillape. My trip to Puerto Montt, Chile is from Osorno, where I spent the night camping and awoke to a beautiful day.

Santiago, Chile to Osorno, Chile

Ride Day 64: Santiago, Chile to Osorno, Chile

Chile, Ride Days, South AmericaBy Peter J RicciFebruary 4, 2017Leave a comment

My trip to Osorno, Chile from the capital Santiago felt like the most boring and arduous ride of my trip so far. It seemed everyone was going on holiday and the traffic was built up everywhere, with accidents stupid drivers rushing to get to their destinations. I ended up camping about 5 miles outside of Osorno, Chile
