Sicily is the largest Island of Italy on the Mediterranean Sea and it is probably the least developed areas of Italy. On this trip I travelled to Catania and then spent a few nights and days in Palermo, Ragusa and Pozzalo, also traveling up Mount Etna. Hiring a car, (Alfa Romeo of course) I traveled pretty much all around this large Island. The roads sometimes feel like ‘back’ streets rather than highways, but highways they are.
Catania is a large city, that given some love, care and investment, could be such a beautiful city, but many buildings are run down and the locals outside of the main areas seem to struggle through life in a developed world. I stayed North of Palermo in Modello, which is a fantastic beachside town with beautiful architecture and beachside restaurants.
From there I traveled along the coast through Agrigento (another gorgeous city) south to Ragusa, which was an amazing cliff face old town. It is a real treasure and a must visit city in Sicily.
From there I went to Pozzallo which is a small seaside village, best known for its ferries to Malta (which I took) and each year has a festival called Ferr’Agosto in which everyone comes to sleep on the beaches and is pretty much a two week party each year in August.
